TRANSIT IN SOUTH BROWARD COUNTY

THE STUDY WAS AN IN-DEPTH DETERMINATION OF ALTERNATE CONCEPTS AND TECHNIQUES FOR SOLVING THE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION PROBLEM AND PROVIDES THE INFORMATION REQUIRED TO INITIATE THE IMPLEMENTATION. THE ANALYSES RESULTED IN PROVIDING A FRAMEWORK OF BASIC SERVICE WHICH IS AN EXPANSION OF THE EXISTING SERVICE. THIS EXPANSION CAN TAKE PLACE IN A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT WAYS. ALTERNATIVE SOURCES OF FINANCING THE INCREASED EQUIPMENT AND SERVICE INCLUDE: (1) SOUTH BROWARD TRANSIT AUTHORITY OR OTHER GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES, (2) PRIVATE TRANSIT COMPANIES, OR (3) EMERGENCY GRANTS FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. THE ANALYSES PERFORMED INDICATED THAT THE TRAVEL DESIRES FOR THE SOUTH BROWARD COUNTY AREA ARE UNIQUE. TWO INTERESTING FEATURES CONCERNING THE AREA'S TRAVEL PATTERNS ARE: (1) THE LACK OF TRAVEL BETWEEN THE EASTERN AND WESTERN PORTIONS OF THE URBANIZED PROJECT AREA, AND (2) THE GREAT AMOUNT OF TRAVEL, ESPECIALLY WORK TRIPS, BETWEEN THE PROJECT AREA AND THE MIAMI URBAN AREA. THE HOLLYWOOD MALL DOES ATTRACT TRIPS FROM ALL SECTIONS OF THE PROJECT AREA AND IN SOME WAYS FORMS A CENTRAL CORE AREA FOR TRAVEL OTHER THAN WORK TRIPS IN SOUTH BROWARD COUNTY. A FRAMEWORK FOR BASIC PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SERVICE WAS DEVELOPED TO SERVICE THE OBSERVED TRAVEL DEMAND. A SEVENTEEN BUS OPERATION IS PROPOSED WHEREBY 13 OF THE VEHICLES WOULD BE ON THE ROAD 12 TO 16 HRS. EACH DAY, EXCEPT SUNDAY. TRANSIT VEHICLES WOULD OPERATE AT 30 MINUTE HEADWAYS OVER MOST OF THE DEVELOPED AREAS OF SOUTH BROWARD COUNTY. THIS SERVICE, USING MODERN AND COMFORTABLE VEHICLES WITH AIR COMFORT FEATURES, IS PROPOSED TO BE OPERATED WITH TWENTY-FIVE CENT FARES. IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC SERVICE, FOUR ALTERNATE PILOT OR TEST PROJECTS WERE PROPOSED FOR USE IN THE SOUTH BROWARD COUNTY AREA. THREE OF THESE PROPOSALS ARE FOR TRANSIT SERVICE WHICH WOULD SUPPLEMENT THE BASIC SERVICE WHILE THE OTHER COULD BE IMPLEMENTED EVENTUALLY THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE PROJECT AREA, REPLACING THE BASIC AREA-WIDE SERVICE. /UMTA/
