SUPPLEMENTARY STATISTICS AND ANALYSIS RELATING TO THE DEMONSTRATION PROJECT: SUPPLEMENT #3 TO MASS TRANSPORTATION IN MASSACHUSETTS, A FINAL REPORT

COMPLETE STATISTICAL DESCRIPTIONS ARE GIVEN OF THE BOSTON AND MAINE RAILROAD AND THE NEW HAVEN RAILROAD, THE COMPANIES WHICH PARTICIPATED IN A SERIES OF RAIL EXPERIMENTS CONDUCTED BY THE MTC. WEEKLY COUNTS OF INBOUND PASSENGERS PER WEEKDAY, PERCENTAGE INCREASES IN HEADCOUNTS AS A RESULT OF THE EXPERIMENTS, AND COUNTS OF PASSENGERS BY STATIONS FOR AUDIT WEEKS ARE GIVEN BOTH GRAPHICALLY AND IN TABLES FOR EACH RAILROAD. SEVERAL BUS EXPERIMENTS WERE UNDERTAKEN BY THE MTC. THESE INCLUDE: (1) THE NORTH SHORE OFF-PEAK FARE REDUCTION EXPERIMENT, (2) THE FALL RIVER INCREASED LOCAL SERVICE EXPERIMENT, AND (3) THE NEWBURYPORT LOCAL SERVICE AND ROUTE EXTENSION EXPERIMENT. A SPECIFIC COST STATEMENT IS INCLUDED IN THE STUDY FOR EACH BUS EXPERIMENT THAT WAS CONDUCTED. PASSENGER VOLUME DATA FOR BOTH THE RAIL AND BUS EXPERIMENTS ARE PRESENTED CONSISTENTLY AS THE AVERAGE OF PASSENGERS IN ONE DIRECTION PER NORMAL BUSINESS DAY, WHICH PERMITS READY COMPARISON OF ONE VOLUME FLOW WITH ANOTHER. THIS SINGLE-DIRECTIONAL UNIT FIGURE CAN ALSO BE TAKEN AS THE NUMBER OF PERSONS INVOLVED. SINCE THE DIRECTIONAL DISPARITY WAS SMALL, THE ONE-DIRECTIONAL FIGURE MAY BE DOUBLED TO DETERMINE THE APPROXIMATE NUMBER OF PASSENGER-TRIPS INVOLVED. /UMTA/
