Identification of local materials using the terrain evaluation approach on the betung jambi road project east sumatra

The geology of betung jambi consists of folded sedimentary rocks, for example; sandstone, claystone, siltstone, shale, etc. The problem during pre construction of roads is locating the best quality local material for road building, because these areas lack hard rocks or stones. A survey procedure is introduced to overcome the problem using the terrain evaluation approach, in which relationships are established between materials, landform, geology and geomorphology. By applying these techniques, a knowledge of landforms known to be associated with materials may be used to locate new surfaces by identifying similar landforms in topographical maps, air photos and landsat imagery. From this study, most new locations of lateritic deposits and quartz gravel have been successfully found along the road between betung and jambi (225km) and tempino muarabulian (50km).
