CHARACTERISTICS OF BAY AREA TRANSIT RIDERS IN 1965 -- TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO 11

THE REPORT IS AN IN-DEPTH RIDERSHIP PROFILE PREPARED FOR THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA TRANSIT DEMONSTRATION PROJECT. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF TRANSIT PATRONS ARE OUTLINED, INCLUDING STATISTICAL BREAKDOWNS AND ANALYSIS BY ACCESS TO BUS ROUTES, TRAVEL MEANS TO DESTINATIONS, COMMUTATION WESTBOUND FROM OAKLAND, EXTERNAL TRANSIT TRIPS, TRIP GENERATION, AUTO OWNERSHIP, AND INBOUND COMMUTATION TO SAN FRANCISCO. THE REPORT ALSO DETAILS AN ORIGIN-DESTINATION SURVEY CONDUCTED AMONG AREA TRANSIT RIDERS TO DETERMINE BOTH PRESENT AND PROJECTED RIDERSHIP VOLUMES. THE SURVEY EMPLOYED BOTH ON-BOARD INTERVIEWS AND MAIL-IN QUESTIONNAIRE FORMS. OTHER SURVEY METHODOLOGY, OBJECTIVES AND PROMOTION TECHNIQUES ARE DISCUSSED. OF PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE TO THE LATTER WAS MASS MEDIA PUBLICITY WHICH URGED THE COOPERATION OF LOCAL TRANSIT PATRONS AND ENHANCED THE OVERALL RESPONSE TO THE PROJECT. THE REPORT CONCLUDES WITH RESULTS OF THE FIELD SURVEY. HOWEVER, THE INFORMATION EMPHASIZES METHODOLOGY AND PROCEDURE RATHER THAN ANALYSIS OF THE DATA COLLECTED. OVERALL, THE AUTHORS NOTE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THEIR SURVEY APPROACH IN PROVIDING A COMPREHENSIVE RIDERSHIP PROFILE OF THE BAY AREA TRANSIT SYSTEM.
