CONSEQUENCES OF CERTAIN DATA ERRORS IN THE TRANSPORTATION PLANNING PROCESS

UNEDITED TRAVEL STUDY DATA FROM THE EVANSVILLE, INDIANA, TRANSPORTATION STUDY ARE USED (1) TO CLASSIFY AND ENUMERATE THE NUMBER OF INCORRECTLY RECORDED DATA ITEMS IN EACH OF THE SETS OF TRAVEL SURVEY DATA, (2) TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS---ON CALIBRATED BASE YEAR TRAFFIC ASSIGNMENT, TRIP DISTRIBUTION, AND TRIP GENERATION MODELS---OF EMPLOYING DIFFERENT COMPUTER EDITING PROCEDURES, (3) ON THE BASIS OF THE ABOVE RESULTS, TO FORMULATE GUIDELINES FOR THE COMPUTER PROCESSING AND EDITING OF TRAVEL SURVEY DATA, AND (4) TO DETERMINE THE ERROR INTRODUCED BY ASSUMING A 50-50 DIRECTIONAL SPLIT IN CONVERTING TRIPTABLES FROM ORIGIN AND DESTINATION FORMAT TO PRODUCTION AND ATTRACTION FORMAT. WHEN SURVEY DATA WERE USED THAT HAD BEEN THOROUGHLY EDITED AND CORRECTED THE RESULTS OBTAINED WERE NOT SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT FROM THOSE OBTAINED FROM TOTALLY UNEDITED DATA. HOWEVER, WHEN DATA WERE USED THAT REPRESENTED A SUBSET OF THE TOTAL, THE INCORRECT DATA HAVING BEEN DISCARDED INSTEAD OF CORRECTED, THE RESULTS WERE SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT. ON THE BASIS OF THESE FINDINGS, GUIDELINES FOR COMPUTER PROCESSING AND EDITING OF TRAVEL SURVEY DATA ARE FORMULATED. AN ASSUMED 50-50 DIRECTIONAL SPLIT FOR ADT TRIPS WAS FOUND TO BE JUSTIFIED.
