TRAFFIC SPEED REPORT NO. 89

THIS IS THE ANNUAL CONTINUING STUDY OF THE SPEEDS OF VEHICLES ON RURAL INDIANA HIGHWAYS. OBSERVATIONS OF SPOT SPEEDS WERE TAKEN ON INTERSTATE, FOUR-LANE, AND TWO-LANE HIGHWAYS THROUGHOUT THE STATE DURING JUNE, JULY AND AUGUST, 1971. ANALYSIS OF THE SPEEDS SHOWED THE OVERALL AVERAGE SPEED FOR PASSANGER CARS WAS 64.9 MILES PER HOUR. THE OVERALL AVERAGE SPEED FOR TRUCKS WAS 57.9 MILES PER HOUR. THIS WAS 9.60 MPH LESS FOR PASSENGER CARS AND 0.37 MILES MORE FOR TRUCKS THAN SIMILAR DATA GIVEN FOR 1970 AT THE SAME LOCATION. /AUTHOR/
