EVALUATION OF TRAFFIC CONTROL AT HIGHWAY INTERSECTIONS

AS PART OF A STUDY UNDERTAKEN TO ASSIST TRAFFIC ENGINEERS TO SELECT APPROPRIATE TRAFFIC SIGNS AND SIGNALS FOR SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS, A DIGITAL DATA RECORDER WAS DEVELOPED THAT COLLECTED TRAFFIC VOLUME AND DELAY DATA AT 19 INTERSECTIONS AT VARYING TRAFFIC FLOW COMPLEXITY. THE RECORDER TRANSCRIBED DELAY DATA ONTO PAPER TAPE FOR UP TO 12 APPROACH LANES. COMPUTER PROGRAMS WERE PREPARED TO SUMMARIZE VOLUME AND DELAY DATA AND REDUCE IT TO A FORM SUITABLE FOR ANALYSIS BY METHODS DEVELOPED IN THIS STUDY. FINALLY, THE PERFORMANCE OF VARIOUS TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES WAS EVALUATED TO ESTABLISH SUITABLE WARRANTS FOR TRAFFIC CONTROL. /AUTHOR/
