UPDATING THE OPPORTUNITY MODEL FOR CONTINUING TRANSPORTATION PLANNING

STUDY ENDEAVORED TO IMPROVE THE HIGHWAY TRIP DISTRIBUTION MODEL ACCORDING TO THE NEED OF A CONTINUING TRANSPORTATION STUDY FOR DESIGN VOLUMES. THE INTERVENING OPPORTUNITIES TRIP DISTRIBUTION MODEL USED AT THE CHICAGO AREA TRANSPORTATION STUDY WAS MODIFIED IN RESPONSE TO THE NEEDS OF CONTINUING TRANSPORTATION PLANNING FOR DESIGN TRAFFIC VOLUMES. THE CONVENTIONAL INTERVENING OPPORTUNITIES THEORY AND MODEL FORMULATION WERE RETAINED AND ONLY MARGINAL REFINEMENT UNDERTAKEN. AN OPPORTUNITY MODEL BASED ON THE PURPOSED TRIP SPLIT WAS FORMULATED AND TESTED AGAINST THE CONVENTIONAL TWO-L MODEL. THE PURPOSE MODEL WAS FOUND TO BE SUPERIOR IN SIMULATING DATA BASE YEARS ZONAL INTERCHANGES. THE ERROR ANALYSIS PERFORMED TO EVALUATE THE ALTERNATIVE MODEL FORMULATIONS IS SIGNIFICANT FOR ALL APPLICATIONS OF THE OPPORTUNITY MODEL. A DISTRIBUTION MODEL EVALUATION PROCEDURE WAS DEVELOPED WHICH FOCUSED ON DISTRIBUTION OF MODEL ERRORS AS MEASURED OVER SEVERAL DIMENSIONS SUCH AS INTERCHANGE VOLUME AND TRIP END DENSITY OF THE SENDING ZONE. A SIMPLIFIED ONE-DIMENSIONAL ERROR FUNCTION IS INTRODUCED TO CONSIDER THE ERRORS ASSOCIATED WITH PREDICTION. THE PURPOSE MODEL DEVELOPED AND THE CONVENTIONAL TWO-L MODEL USED AT THE CHICAGO AREA TRANSPORTATION STUDY ARE COMPARED USING THE ANALYSIS OF ERRORS APPROACH.
