APPLICATIONS OF ELECTRONICS AND TELEMETRY IN FUTURE HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SYSTEMS - ELECTRONICS IN HIGHWAY TRANSPORTATION

THE VIGOROUS APPLICATION OF ELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGY TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRAFFIC ADVISORY COMMAND AND CONTROL SYSTEMS WILL SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCE TRAFFIC CONGESTION AND HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. THE DRIVER NEEDS TO BE ASSISTED ESPECIALLY AT CRITICAL POINTS ALONG A HIGHWAY OR STREET NETWORK. FOUR SPECIFIC PROGRAMS UNDER DEVELOPMENT BY THE BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS (BPR) INVOLVE: (1) OVERTAKING AND PASSING ON RURAL ROADS; (2) ROUTE GUIDANCE; (3) FREEWAY MERGING; AND (4) URBAN TRAFFIC CONTROL. THE SUCCESS OF THESE APPLICATIONS DEPENDS ON ELECTRONICS AND TELEMETRY. THESE CURRENT RESEARCH PROGRAMS ARE THE FIRST GENERATION OF TRAFFIC SYSTEMS; THEY WILL EVENTUALLY EVOLVE INTO MORE SOPHISTICATED SYSTEMS. /BPR/
