PRELIMINARY REPORT ON THE SCREEN LINE CHECKS

THE CHICAGO AREA TRANSPORTATION STUDY HAS TAKEN A SAMPLE BY INTERVIEW SURVEYS OF ALL PERSON-TRIPS IN ITS STUDY AREA ON A TYPICAL WEEKDAY. THESE SURVEYS INCLUDED THE INTERNAL, OR HOME INTERVIEW AND TRUCK-TAXI, AND THE EXTERNAL, OR CORDON AND SCREEN LINE ROADSIDE INTERVIEW. TO CHECK THESE SAMPLES, THE STUDY AREA WAS DIVIDED INTO HALVES BY AN IMAGINARY LINE CALLED THE SCREEN LINE. THE UNIVERSE FROM WHICH A SAMPLE WAS TAKEN WAS ESTIMATED FROM MANUAL AND MACHINE TRAFFIC COUNTS IN THE AREA. THE EXPANDED TRAVEL INFORMATION FROM THE INTERNAL SURVEYS COULD THEN BE CHECKED AGAINST THIS SEPARATE SOURCE BY ISOLATING ALL OF THE TRIPS REPORTED BY THE INTERNAL SURVEYS WHICH HAD ORIGIN AND DESTINATION ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE SCREEN LINE. SEVERAL SUCH CHECKS WERE MADE AND RESULTS COMPARED.
