RADIOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF WATER IN NATURAL ROCK, CONCRETE PAVEMENTS

THIS METHOD IS BASED ON THE SLOWING AND SCATTERING OF FAST NEUTRONS BY HYDROGEN. THE NUMBER OF SLOW NEUTRONS FORMING AROUND THE NEUTRON SOURCE IS A MEASURE OF THE WATER IN THE MATERIAL. THE APPARATUS USED CONSISTS OF A 5 MC RADIUM- BERYLLIUM OR POLONTIUM-BERYLLIUM NEUTRON SOURCE WITH FLUX D. 10 EXPONENT 5 MINUS 10 EXPONENT 6 NEUTRONS/SEC. THE SLOW- NEUTRON DETECTOR IS A BORON TRI-FLUORIDE COUNTING TUBE. ALL SUBSTANCES INVESTIGATED GIVE A SINGLE CHARACTERISTICS CURVE FOR VOLUME PERCENTAGE OF WATER VS PULSE RATE, WHICH DIFFERS FROM THAT OF LOAM OR LOESS. THE MINIMUM THICKNESS OF SAMPLE IS 20 CM. FOR A MATERIAL CONTAINING 17G WATER /100 CC. AND 30 CM. FOR 2.4G WATER/ 100 CC. THE MEASUREMENT TAKES 10 MINUTES AND THE METHOD IS SUITABLE FOR SAND, GRAVEL, MACADAM, FRESH CONCRETE, AND EARTH.
