CLOSURE ON PRELOADING FOR HEAVY INDUSTRIAL INSTALLATIONS

THE AUTHORS APPRECIATE THE CONTRIBUTION BY RABINOVICI. THE POINTS HE RAISED ARE AS FOLLOWS: (1) THAT "THE REAL TIME- SETTLEMENT CURVE IS DIFFERENT FROM THE TYPICAL ONE OBTAINED FROM THE COMPRESSION TEST." (2) THE MODULUS OF DEFORMATION AS ESTIMATED BY THE LABORATORY TESTS INCREASE WITH INCREASING LOADS. THE MODULUS OF DEFORMATION OF THE GROUND AS INFERRED FROM FIELD OBSERVATIONS DURING PRELOADING (APPLIED FILL LOAD VERSUS OBSERVED SETTLEMENT) SHOWS AN INVERSE TENDENCY. (3) THE DECREASE OF GROUND MODULUS OF DEFORMATION WITH APPLIED LOAD MIGHT BE DUE TO PLASTIC DEFORMATION OF THE SOIL MASS. CONCERNING THE FIRST POINT THE RESPONSE OF THE GROUND TO APPLIED LOADING BY THE FILL WAS RELATIVELY FAST. ONE-DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT AS A PART OF THE ROUTINE INVESTIGATION OF THE LEAN CLAYS AND THE SILTS IN THE UPPER COMPRESSIBLE DEPOSITS. THE COEFFICIENTS OF CONSOLIDATION WERE USED FOR A QUALITATIVE APPRECIATION OF THE RATE OF SETTLEMENT OF THE SILTY AND THE CLAYEY PART OF THIS DEPOSIT. THE RESULTS GIVEN IN FIGURE 9 AND THE FORECAST OF THE DURATION OF SETTLEMENT WERE BASED PARTLY ON THE RESULTS OF CONSOLIDATION TESTS AND PARTLY ON A GENERAL APPRECIATION OF THE SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS. CONCERNING THE SECOND AND THIRD POINTS: IT IS AGREED THAT A PLOT OF PRESSURE APPLIED BY THE FILL VERSUS INDUCED SETTLEMENT OF THE GROUND WOULD NOT ALWAYS GIVE THE TYPICAL PRESSURE SETTLEMENT CURVES OF THE CONSOLIDATION TEST. THE SHAPES OF THE CURVES PLOTTED FROM DATA ON FIGURES 20 TO 29 ARE VARIABLE. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE RESULTS REPORTED IN THE PAPER DO NOT LEND TO FURTHER ANALYSIS. IT IS, THEREFORE, DIFFICULT TO DIFFERENTIATE EXPLICITLY WHICH PRESSURE INDUCES WHICH FINAL SETTLEMENT OF THE GROUND. AS THIS QUESTION RAISED BY RABINOVICI IS IMPORTANT IN SETTLEMENT ANALYSIS, THE WRITERS DO NOT THINK THAT THE RESULTS REPORTED ARE SHARP ENOUGH FOR THIS PURPOSE. /AUTHOR/
