TREATMENT OF SWELLING CLAYS

A THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENT OF ACTIVE CLAYS IS PROVIDED. THE THEORETICAL DISCUSSION IS SIMPLIFIED BY CONSIDERING ONLY THE TWO-DIMENSIONAL CASE, I.E., VERTICAL MOVEMENT. TERZAGHI'S CONSOLIDATION MODEL IS EMPLOYED FOR THIS PURPOSE, AND ATTENTION IS DIRECTED TOWARD THE EFFECTS OF DESICCATION. SEVERAL CURVES ARE PRESENTED TO DISPLAY POSSIBLE INTERRELATIONSHIPS OF PRESSURE AND VOIDS RATIO, AND EXPLANATIONS ARE GIVEN FOR THE DIVERGENCE OF THE DESICCATION-CONSOLIDATION AND PRESSURE-CONSOLIDATION CURVES. VOLUMETRIC FLUCTUATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH GEOLOGIC HISTORY ARE EXAMINED BRIEFLY. QUESTIONS ARE RAISED WHEN DESIGN STRUCTURE TO BE PLACED ON PRECONSOLIDATED CLAYS ARE USED TO ESTABLISH LABORATORY PROCEDURE FOR ASCERTAINING DESIGN PARAMETERS. FIELD DATA FROM A 1967 MISSISSIPPI PROJECT ARE EMPLOYED TO CORRELATE THEORETICAL AND ACTUAL VALUES, ALTERNATIVE MEANS OF DESIGN PROVISION FOR SWELL POTENTIAL ARE DISCUSSED AND AN APPROPRIATE METHOD SELECTED, AND TESTS TO BE PERFORMED ON A FIELD RESEARCH SECTION ARE DESCRIBED. DISCUSSED AND AN APPROPRIATE METHOD SELECTED, AND TESTS TO BE PERFORMED ON A FIELD RESEARCH SECTION ARE DESCRIBED.
