PERFORMANCE OF MUDDY RUN EMBANKMENT

THE INSTRUMENTATION AND FIELD PERFORMANCE OF A 250-FT HIGH DAM CONSTRUCTED OF A MICACEOUS SCHIST ARE DESCRIBED. MAXIMUM COMPRESSION OF THE ROCKFILL WAS IN EXCESS OF 8%, COMPARED WITH 2% FOR THE COMPACTED CORE OF RESIDUAL SOIL. MAXIMUM SETTLEMENT OF THE ROCKFILL DURING CONSTRUCTION WAS 3 FT WITH UP TO 2 FT OF DIFFERENTIAL VERTICAL MOVEMENT BETWEEN THE CORE AND ROCKFILL. SIGNIFICANT UPSTREAM AND DOWNSTREAM MOVEMENTS DEVELOPED WITHIN THE ROCKFILL SHELLS DURING CONSTRUCTION AND FIRST FILLING OF THE RESERVOIR. POST- CONSTRUCTION MOVEMENTS AND SETTLEMENTS OF THE EMBANKMENT HAVE BEEN MODEST. PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION IN-SITU TORSION SHEAR TESTS WERE PERFORMED ON THE MICACEOUS SCHIST AND LARGE-SCALE FIELD DIRECT SHEAR TESTS WERE MADE ON THE COMPACTED ROCKFILL. THE OVER-ALL PERFORMANCE OF THE EMBANKMENT IS EXCELLENT /ASCE/
