SETTLEMENTS UNDER FOUNDATIONS: CALCULATIUONS USING THE TRIAXIAL APPARATUS

A NEW METHOD IS PROPOSED FOR THE CALCULATION OF THE SETTLEMENT RESULTING FROM A FOUNDATION. IT CONSISTS OF A TRIAXIAL RECONSOLIDATION OF THE REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLES TAKEN FROM EACH LAYER, THEN SUMBITTING THEM IN THE SAME APPARATUS TO THE INCREMENTS OF ADDITIONAL SHEAR FORCES THAT WOULD BE CAUSED BY THE FOUNDATIONS. THIS PROCESS IS THOUGHT TO BE MORE CONVENIENT THAN THE OEDOMETRICAL METHOD IN WHICH, WITHOUT ANY RECONSOLIDATION, THE SAMPLE IS SUBJECTED TO AN INCORRECT CONFINING PROCESS. THE CASES OF FLEXIBLE FOUNDATIONS (UNIFORM DISTRIBUTION OF VERTICAL STRESSES) AND OF RIGID FOUNDATIONS (PARABOLIC DISTRIBUTION) ARE CONSIDERED. THE AUTHORS INSIST THAT ONE CANNOT AVOID DETERMINING POISSON'S RATIO. /AUTHOR/
