VIBRATORY COMPACTION OF GRANULAR MEDIA (IN FRENCH)

THE INFLUENCE IS DEFINED OF VIBRATIONS ON SOME MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF FINE SANDS. THE FIRST PART OF THE INVESTIGATION OUTLINES THE RESEARCH AND BIBLIOGRAPHIC STUDY CARRIED OUT. AN EXPERIMENTAL TEST RIG WAS DEVELOPED AND A CELL DESIGNED FOR SUBJECTING THE MATERIAL UNDER STUDY TO COMPRESSIONS VARYING IN LOAD AND RATE FOR THE WHOLE RANGE OF VIBRATIONS PRODUCED BY THE GENERATOR. EQUIPMENT FOR MEASURING AND RECORDING STRESSES AND DEFORMATIONS, AND FOR THE CONTINUOUS CONTROL OF THE VIBRATIONS WAS ALSO DEVELOPED. PARAMETERS INFLUENCING THE COMPRESSIBILITY OF THE MATERIAL UNDER VIBRATION WERE INVESTIGATED: LOAD, DEGREE AND RATE OF DEFORMATION VIBRATION CHARACTERISTICS, AND CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH STRESSES CAUSED BY COMPRESSION COULD BE RELAXED. TWO METHODS WERE USED TO INTERPRET THE TEST RESULTS. (1) THE RHEOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION WAS ESPECIALLY CONCERNED WITH THE VISCOELASTIC PROPERTIES OF THE MEDIUM. VARIATIONS IN VISCOSITY AND ELASTICITY WERE EXPLAINED AS A FUNCTION OF VIBRATION AND LOADING CHARACTERISTICS. (2) THE SECOND INTERPRETATION WAS BASED ON GRANULAR INTERACTIONS BUT LEADS TO A QUALITATIVE EXPLANATION ONLY. THE RESULTS OBTAINED COULD SERVE AS A BASE FOR STANDARDIZING COMPACTION TESTS ON GRANULAR MEDIA TO WHICH THE PROCTOR TEST CANNOT BE SATISFACTORILY APPLIED, AND COULD BE USED IN THE TECHNOLOGY OF VIBRATED CONCRETE. /LCPC/RRL/
