SOIL-CEMENT USED FOR ROADWAY MAINTENANCE

IN PATCHING SECONDARY ROADS WITH SOIL-CEMENT THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS REMOVES THE BROKEN PAVEMENT, PLUS ANY UNDERLYING UNSTABLE SOIL, AND FILLS THE EXCAVATION WITH ABOUT A 10-IN. THICKNESS OF SOIL-CEMENT PLACED OVER CRUSHED STONE. THE SOIL-CEMENT MIX IS COMPACTED IN PLACE IN ROUGHLY 4-IN. LAYERS WITH PNEUMATIC TAMPERS AND THE LAST LAYER IS COVERED WITH A 1-IN. SAND-ASPHALT WEARING SURFACE. THE PATCHED AREAS ARE OPENED AT ONCE TO TRAFFIC.
