MODEL EXPERIMENTS ON LATERAL RESISTANCE OF FOOTING FOUNDATION IN COHESIVE SOIL
In the design of a footing foundation, the lateral load must be considered as well as the vertical load. A series of model experiments in cohesive soil were carried out in order to make clear the problem concerning the lateral resistance in front of a footing foundation. As a result, the maximum lateral resistant forces agreed roughly with the Rankine's passive earth pressures. The lateral displacements to attain the maximum resistant forces were checked in connection with the depths and the cone-penetration resistances of the ground.
