TRAFFIC CAPACITY OF RURAL TWO-LANE HIGHWAYS

THE NEED IS DISCUSSED TO DEFINE THE MOST BENEFICIAL HIGHWAY IMPROVEMENTS IN RELATION TO TRAFFIC CAPACITY. A DEFINITION OF AN ACCEPTABLE LEVEL OF SERVICE IS PROPOSED, BASED ON ACCUMULATION AND DISPERSAL OF MOVING QUEUES. ALIGNMENT FEATURES RESTRICTING PASSING ARE REVIEWED AND THEORETICAL CAPACITIES ARE CALCULATED, ASSUMING TYPICAL ENGLISH SPEED DISTRIBUTIONS. CAPACITIES OF GRADIENTS AND DELAYS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. /BPR/
