THE CAPACITY AND ARRANGEMENT OF TRAFFIC LANES HAVING A WIDTH OF LESS THAN 3.00M (IN GERMAN)

NARROW TRAFFIC LANES ARE OFTEN PROOVIDED IN URBAN AREAS TO ACHIEVE BETTER UTILIZATION OF ROAD SPACE. THE AUTHOR EXAMINES THE CAPACITY OF NARROW TRAFFIC LANES BY MEANS OF TIME-REQUIREMENT MEASUREMENTS UNDERTAKEN AT A JUNCTION ACCESS ROAD IN MUNICH AND ONE IN VIENNA, AND SHOWS THAT THE USE OF NARROW TRAFFIC LANES IS DETERMINED BY THE PROPORTION OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLES. THE AUTHOR ALSO EXAMINES TRAFFIC SAFETY ON NARROW LANES BY CONSIDERING THE PROBABILITY OF AN ACCIDENT CAUSED BY LATERAL CONTACT BETWEEN VEHICLES. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE NECESSARY LATERAL SPACING OF VEHICLES SHOULD BE DEFINED AT THE PLANNING STAGE, AND THAT THE DEFINITION SHOULD BE BASED ON MODEL TESTS WHICH TAKE ACCOUNT OF VARYING TRAFFIC SPEED. /FG/RRL/
