THE EFFECT OF SAMPLING ON THE DRAINED PROPERTIES OF LEDA CLAY
A COMPARISON OF CONSOLIDATED DRAINED TRIAXIAL RESULTS ON SENSITIVE LEDA CLAY SAMPLED BY DIFFERENT SAMPLING METHODS IS PRESENTED. PROPERLY SAMPLED SPECIMENS, TESTED AT A CONFINING PRESSURE OF APPROXIMETELY ONE-HALT THE PRECONSOLIDATION PRESSURE, RESULT IN AN EFFECTIVE MAJOR PRINCIPAL STRESS AT YIELD APPROXIMATELY EQUAL TO THE PRECONSOLIDATION PRESSURE MEASURED IN THE LABORATORY ODOMETER TEST WHICH ITSELF WAS AFFECTED BY THE SAMPLING METHOD. SAMPLES TESTED AT CONFINING PRESSURES LESS THAN THE PRECONSOLIDATION PRESSURE HAD SIMILAR DEFORMATION MODULI PRIOR TO YIELD WITH THE BETTER SAMPLING METHODS RESULTING IN SLIGHTLY HIGHER MODULI. VOLUME CHANGES PRIOR TO YIELD WERE APPROXIMATELY PROPORTIONAL TO AXIAL STRAIN EXCEPT AT HIGH OVERCONSOLIDATION RATIOS THUS GIVING CONSTANT VALUES OF INFERRED POISSON'S RATIO. POISSON'S RATIO TENDED TO INCREASE AS THE OVERCONSOLIDATION RATIO INCREASED AND NEGATIVE VALUES OCCURRED AT CONFINING PRESSURES CLOSE TO THE PRECONSOLIDATION PRESSURE. ONCE THE CONFINING PRESSURE EXCEEDED THE PRECONSOLIDATION PRESSURE THE CEMENTED GRAIN STRUCTURE COLLAPSED AND VALUES OF POISSON'S RATIO ASSOCIATED WITH UNBONDED NORMALLY CONSOLIDATED SOILS WERE RECORDED.
