SELECTION OF OPTIMUM BINDER CONTENT FOR BITUMINOUS TREATED BASES
THIS REPORT DISCUSSES A TEST METHOD FOR SELECTING THE OPTIMUM ASPHALTIC BINDER CONTENT NECESSARY TO TREAT AN IN-PLACE MATERIAL IN ORDER TO MAKE IT SUITABLE FOR USE AS A BITUMINOUS TREATED BASE. THIS METHOD WAS DEVELOPED CONSIDERING COHESION (TENSILE STRENGTH) AS DETERMINED BY THE CALIFORNIA COHESIOMETER AND THE REDUCTION IN PERMEABILITY AND CAPALLARY ACTION OF THE BITUMINOUS TREATED MATERIALS AS MEASURED BY A 5-DAY MOISTURE ABSORPTION OF THE MIXTURE. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE THE SUITABILITY OF MATERIAL FOR TREATMENT AND THE USE OF LIQUID ASPHALTS AND EMULSIONS USED FOR TREATMENT. THE REPORT RECOMMENDS ADDITIONAL STUDY TO DETERMINE STRUCTURAL THICKNESS DESIGN REQUIREMENTS. /FHWA/
