EXTERNAL SHAPE DETERMINATION OF CYLINDRICAL SOIL AND ROCK SAMPLES

THIS REPORT DESCRIBES THE TECHNIQUES USED FOR DETERMINING THE CHANGE IN SHAPE OF A TRIAXIALLY TESTED 76.2 X 152.4 MM (3 X 6 INCH) CYLINDRICAL SAMPLE. ON A SAMPLE OF KNOWN ORIENTATION, THE CHANGE IN DIAMETER IN VARIOUS DIRECTIONS WITH RESPECT TO HEIGHT IS MEASURED WITH A SUITABLY EQUIPPED ROTATING STAGE. THESE MEASUREMENTS ARE THEN TABULATED, PRESENTED IN THE FORM OF A CONTOURED DIAGRAM, SIMILAR TO A MERCATOR PROJECTION AND COMPARED WITH A UNIFORM CYLINDER. THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM SAMPLES OF THE SAME TYPE ARE USED TO ASSIST IN THE DETERMINATION OF THE MODE OF FAILURE OF THE MATERIAL. /AUTHOR/
