MEASURING MOVEMENTS OF ENGINEERING STRUCTURES

MOVEMENTS OF ENGINEERING STRUCTURES CAN BE MEASURED WITH SURVEYING EQUIPMENT FROM STABLE POSITIONS OUTSIDE THE STRESS FIELD OF THE STRUCTURE. SIX EXAMPLES OF FIELD OBSERVATIONS ARE GIVEN WHICH RANGE FROM SETTLEMENT MEASUREMENTS OF BUILDINGS MADE WITH A PRECISION LEVEL TO THREE-DIMENSIONAL MOVEMENTS OF POSITIONS ON THE FACE OF A ROCKFILL DAM OBTAINED BY MEASUREMENTS MADE WITH ELECTRONIC DISTANCE MEASURING INSTRUMENTS. EMPHASIS IS PUT ON THE IMPORTANCE OF USING REFERENCE MONUMENTS WHICH ARE NOT AFFECTED BY SURFACE GROUND MOVEMENTS AND OF ACCURATE LOCATION OF INSTRUMENTS AND THEIR TARGETS. EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN OF MONUMENT DESIGN, AND THE STABILITY OF THE MONUMENTS IS ILLUSTRATED BY MEASUREMENTS MADE EACH MONTH FOR A YEAR OF 90 LENGTHS OF 50M BETWEEN MONUMENTS. THE MOVEMENTS OF RESERVOIR EMBANKMENT DAMS MEASURED BY ELECTRONIC DISTANCE MEASURING INSTRUMENTS ARE COMPARED WITH THOSE MEASURED BY AN INVERTED PENDULUM AT ONE DAM, AND BY TRIANGULATION AND PRECISE LEVELLING AT ANOTHER DAM. /AUTHOR/
