TENTATIVE FIELD ENGINEERING INDEX FOR ROCKS
KNOWLEDGE OF ROCK PROPERTIES IS ESSENTIAL TO THE DESIGN OF STRUCTURES UTILIZING THE ROCK MASS AS PART OF THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM AND TO THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS IN TERMS OF EXCAVATION METHODS AND PREVENTION OF ROCK FAILURES. THE DETERMINATION OF ROCK PROPERTIES RELEVANT TO DESIGN AND THE QUICK DISSEMINATION OF THIS KNOWLEDGE, IN A MEANINGFUL FORM TO THE USER, ARE IMPORTANT IN TERMS OF DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT. A FIELD ENGINEERING INDEX FOR ROCK HAS BEEN DEVELOPED IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A LANGUAGE BY MEANS OF WHICH THE ENGINEERING CHARACTERISTICS OF A PARTICULAR ROCK MAY BE PRESENTED IN A BRIEF, CONCISE AND RELEVANT MANNER. THE ENGINEERING INDEX COMBINES THE LITHOLOGY AND THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE INTACT ROCK, TO MAKE THE INFORMATION MORE MEANINGFUL AND USEFUL TO ENGINEERS AND CONTRACTORS. DATA FOR THE ENGINEERING INDEX IS OBTAINED AND ACCURATELY DETERMINED FROM FIELD TESTS PERFORMED AT THE BOREHOLE SITE. EXAMPLES OF THE PROPOSED ENGINEERING INDEX SYSTEM ARE ILLUSTRATED BY USE OF PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED DATA AND FROM FIELD INFORMATION.
