THE CONCEPT OF FREE TIME WITHIN THE FAMILY

THIS PAPER IS A SUMMARY OF SOME OF THE RESULTS OF THE MULTINATIONAL COMPARATIVE TIME BUDGET RESEARCH PROJECT PRESENTED TO THE 6TH WORLD CONGRESS OF SOCIOLOGY IN SEPT. 1966. ITS AIM IS TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ON THE DIFFERENCES IN THE USE OF TIME BETWEEN WORKING MEN, WORKING WOMEN AND NON-WORKING WOMEN. THE PROJECT INVOLVED THE PREPARATION OF COMPARATIVE TIME BUDGETS OF ADULT POPULATIONS (FROM 18 TO 65) WHO WERE SUBJECTED IN VARYING DEGREES TO THE INFLUENCES OF INDUSTRIALISATION AND URBANISATION. THE COUNTRIES TAKING PART WERE BELGIUM, BULGARIA, FRANCE, HUNGARY, POLAND, THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, THE USSR, THE USA, AND YUGOSLAVIA. THE SURVEY SITES WERE TOWNS OF 30000 TO 280000 INHABITANTS. THE NATURE OF THE DAILY ACTIVITIES IN WHICH PEOPLE WERE INVOLVED WERE CLASSIFIED INTO PRIMARY AND SECONDARY ACTIVITIES. THE RESULTS OBTAINED ILLUSTRATE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVING PATTERNS OF THE MEMBERS OF A POPULATION ACCORDING TO THEIR FAMILY STATUS. SEE ALSO IRRD ABSTRACT NO 203623.
