THE ANLYSIS OF ROUTE-CHOICE AND MODAL-SPLIT SITUATIONS IN RESEARCH INTO THE VALUE OF TIME

THE AUTHOR REVIEWS THREE GENERAL PROCEDURES DEVELOPED FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF ROUTE-CHOICE AND MODAL SPLIT MODELS: THE "BEESLEY METHOD", THE "QUARMBY METHOD", AND PROBABILITY FUNCTIONS AND THE WARTER ALGORITHM. THE FIRST IS LARGELY A TRIAL-AND-ERROR METHOD, SUITABLE ONLY FOR USE IN A TWO- VARIABLE MODEL, THE OTHERS ARE MORE APPROPRIATE IN ANALYSES WHERE MORE THAN TWO PARAMETERS ENTER INTO A MODEL. IN ALL THREE CASES, THE PRINCIPAL CRITERION NORMALLY EMPLOYED AS A MEASURE OF "GOODNESS OF FIT" IS THE EXTENT TO WHICH THE MODEL CORRECTLY PREDICTS THE ACTUAL CHOICES MADE IN THE SAMPLE, AND THE OVERALL MODAL OR ROUTE CHOICE SPLIT. FACTORS INFLUENCING CHOICE-MAKING ARE CONSIDERED, AND ROUTE CHOICE SITUATIONS SUITABLE FOR INVESTIGATION ARE DIVIDED INTO SINGLE CHOICE TOLLED ROUTES, MULTI-CHOICE TOLLED ROUTES AND MULTI-CHOICE UNTOLLED ROUTES.
