URBAN MASS TRANSPORTATION TRAVEL SURVEYS

THE PURPOSE IS TO DESCRIBE ALTERNATIVE PROCEDURES FOR COLLECTING URBAN MASS TRANSPORTATION TRAVEL DATA. FIRST, A BRIEF DISCUSSION OF COMPREHENSIVE URBAN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING AND THE INTEGRATION OF TRANSIT PLANNING AS ONE ELEMENT IN THAT PROCESS IS PRESENTED. THE MAJOR "THINK" STEPS THAT MUST BE UNDERTAKEN IN DESIGNING AND PREPARING FOR A MASS TRANSPORTATION TRAVEL SURVEY ARE DESCRIBED FOR DETERMINING REASONS FOR COLLECTING DATA. THE ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES, AND THE COST PARAMETERS OF FOUR TYPES OF TRANSIT USER SURVEYS ARE DESCRIBED. THE FOUR TYPES ARE (1) THE ON-BOARD INTERVIEW TECHNIQUE, (2) THE SELF-ADMINISTERED MAILBACK TECHNIQUE, (3) THE DWELLING UNIT FOLLOW-UP INTERVIEW TECHNIQUE, AND (4) THE TRANSIT STATION ON-SITE INTERVIEW TECHNIQUE. DETAILED GUIDELINES NEEDED TO CONDUCT EACH OF THE TRANSIT USER SURVEYS ARE INCLUDED. AFTER COLLECTING THE TRANSIT TRAVEL DATA, IT IS IMPORTANT TO EVALUATE THE RESULTS OF THE SURVEY BY MAKING APPROPRIATE ACCURACY CHECKS. SEVERAL COMMONLY USED TECHNIQUES AVAILABLE FOR OBTAINING COMPREHENSIVE DATA ARE DESCRIBED BRIEFLY IN CHAPTER SIX, WITH APPROPRIATE REFERENCES NOTED. /AUTHOR/
