ESTIMATING THE EXPORT CAPACITY OF A TERMINAL FROM ITS PARAMETERS

The random arrival pattern of tankers is used to develop arithmetical methods of calculating annual ships delays associated with pre-defined facilities, including--loading rate, service time; number of berths; tankage; pipeline throughput. Factual information from four anonymous terminals is compared with calculated figures. Graphs relating tankage to cargo size for selected ships delays are developed and it is concluded that tankage required is relatively insensitive to annual throughput. The formation of simulation models is discussed. The worked examples are derived from arithmetic logic variously based on--probability; Monte Carlo methods; and queueing theory. These methods are used to test the suppositious export capacity of proposed facilities by trial and error, using unsophisticated methods of calculation.
