CONTRIBUTION OF AUTOMOBILES TO POLLUTION
THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY HAS BEEN ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITY FOR A NUMBER OF PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO ABATE POLLUTION EMANATING FROM MOTOR VEHICLES. REGULATIONS ESTABLISHING STANDARDS, TESTING PROCEDURES, AND ENFORCEMENT PRACTICES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED AND PROMULGATED TO GUIDE FUTURE ACTIONS. STAFF AND CONTRACT PERSONNEL FROM THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES ARE ASSESSING THE TECHNOLOGY FEASIBILITY OF ATTAINING THE 1975 AND 1976 STANDARDS ESTABLISHED IN THE LEGISLATION. EPA IS EXPANDING ITS CAPABILITY TO MONITOR INDUSTRY PROGRESS, WHICH IS NOW PRIMARILY FOCUSED UPON ADD-ON DEVICES TO CLEAN UP THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE. DEMONSTRATION PROGRAMS HAVE BEEN INITIATED CONCERNING THE FEASIBILITY OF LOW-EMISSION VEHICLES. EPA IS ALSO DIRECTING A RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR ALTERNATIVE POWER SYSTEMS.
