REDIRECTIVE EFFECTIVENESS OF BARRIER CURBS

RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT BARRIER-CURB REDIRECTION PERFORMANCE CAN BE DESCRIBED IN TERMS OF A LIMITING CHARACTERISTIC VELOCITY WHICH IS THE COMPONENT OF VEHICLE VELOCITY NORMAL TO THE CURB FACE. THE USE OF THIS PERFORMANCE MEASURE AND DISTRIBUTION OF VEHICLE SPEED AND THE ANGLE AT WHICH THE VEHICLE LEFT THE ROAD PERMITS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MEASURE FOR BARRIER-CURB REDIRECTION EFFECTIVENESS. THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF THIS MEASURE IT IS SHOWN THAT IN URBAN TRAFFIC CONDITIONS, AN EFFICIENTLY DESIGNED BARRIER CURB CAN BE EXPECTED TO SUCCESSFULLY REDIRECT 70 PERCENT OF THE VEHICLES ACCIDENTALLY LEAVING THE ROADWAY. /AUTHOR/
