THE APPLICATION OF LINEAR PROGRAMMING TO THE DETERMINATION OF ROAD TRAFFIC DESIRE LINE PATTERNS

VARIOUS POTENTIAL TYPE MODELS SUCH AS THE GRAVITY MODEL HAVE BEEN USED TO DETERMINE THE SYNTHETIC ROAD TRAFFIC DESIRE LINE PATTERN FOR THE COMMUNITY BEING STUDIED. SUCH MODELS GIVE RESULTS THAT REFLECT THE DESIRE OF THE INDIVIDUAL TRIP MAKER TO MINIMIZE HIS TRAVEL TIME IN CHOOSING BETWEEN LAND-USE ATTRACTIONS OF VARYING MAGNITUDES. A LINEAR PROGRAMMING MODEL IN WHICH THE TOTAL TRAVEL TIME OF ALL TRIP MAKERS IS MINIMIZED HAS BEEN SHOWN TO PRODUCE PATTERNS OF A SIMPLE KIND. THIS PAPER CONTAINS A STUDY OF THE RELATIVE EFFICACY OF THE TWO METHODS WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE STRATIFICATION OF THE TRIP CLASS AND DEVELOPS THE CONCEPT OF THE LINEAR PROGRAMMING MODEL SOLUTION AS A REFERENCE SOLUTION.
