UTILIZATION OF DIGITAL COMPUTERS FOR REAL TIME TRAFFIC CONTROL (PART ONE)

MORE AND MORE COMPUTER-CONTROLLED SYSTEMS ARE BEING UTILIZED TO REGULATE TRAFFIC FLOW IN METROPOLITAN AREAS. THE PRACTICING TRAFFIC ENGINEER IS THEREFORE FACED WITH YET ANOTHER BODY OF KNOWLEDGE WITH WHICH HE MUST BECOME CONVERSANT IF HE IS TO STAY ABREAST OF TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS IN HIS FIELD. THIS PAPER (PART ONE) HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR THE PURPOSE OF ASSISTING THE TRAFFIC ENGINEER WITH LITTLE OR NO BACKGROUND IN COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THESE MACHINES AND HOW THEY CAN BE APPLIED TO TRAFFIC CONTROL. PART TWO OF THIS REPORT PRESENTS A DISCUSSION OF THE TWO DIGITAL CONTROL SYSTEMS WHICH ARE PRESENTLY IN OPERATION IN SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA, AND WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS. /BPR/
