TRAFFIC CHARACTERISTICS AND PHENOMENA ON HIGH DENSITY CONTROLLED ACCESS FACILITIES

THE FINDINGS OF FREEWAY TRAFFIC STUDIES ON THE FORD AND DAVISON EXPRESSWAYS IN DETROIT, MICHIGAN ARE REPORTED. EACH STUDY LOCATION WAS FOR ONE DIRECTION ONLY AND CONSISTED OF MEASURING SPEED, VOLUME, AND HEADWAY CHARACTERISTICS ON A PER MINUTE AND A PER LANE BASIS FOR A TWENTY-FOUR HOUR PERIOD. THE INDIVIDUAL TRAFFIC FLOW CHARACTERISTICS ARE INDICATED THAT APPEAR TO FOLLOW CERTAIN PREDICTABLE PATTERNS AND THESE SAME FLOW CHARACTERISTICS SEEM TO BE INTERRELATED. DATA COLLECTED ON THE THREE CHARACTERISTICS ARE INTERRELATED WITH TRAFFIC DENSITY BY MATHEMATICAL EQUATIONS. THE DENSITY IS COMPUTED MATHEMATICALLY BY DIVIDING THE TRAFFIC VOLUME BY AVERAGE SPEED. LINEAR REGRESSION ANALYSES WERE CONDUCTED FOR THE SPEED-VOLUME RELATIONSHIPS OF EACH LANE OF THE TWO EXPRESSWAYS. THE RELATIONSHIP OF DENSITY TO OTHER FUNDAMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS OF TRAFFIC FLOW FOR THE THREE LANES OF THE FORD EXPRESSWAY IS PRESENTED IN A FIGURE. A LINEAR EQUATION IS PRESENTED FOR THE SPEED-VOLUME RELATIONSHIP FOR EACH LANE OF THE FORD EXPRESSWAY.
