SIMPLE TIME SERIES AND SEASONAL FACTORS FOR ROAD TRAFFIC SAMPLING

THE ANALYSIS OF TIME SERIES IS APPLIED TO THE STUDY OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AVERAGE DAILY TRAFFIC FLOW ON MAIN ROADS IN AUSTRALIA. THE PAPER IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS. IN PART I SOME BASIC CONCEPTS OF TIME SERIES ANALYSIS ARE DISCUSSED: STATIONARITY, MOVING AVERAGE, AND MODELS (BOTH ADDITIVE AND MULTIPLICATIVE) FOR SEASONAL FACTORS. THE SEASONAL FACTORS MAY BE HOURS OF THE DAY, DAYS OF THE WEEK, OR MONTHS OF THE YEAR. AN EXAMPLE BASED ON BOTH MODEL FORMS IS USED TO ILLUSTRATE THE METHODS OF COMPUTING THE SEASONAL EFFECTS. IN PART II THE DESIGN OF A TRAFFIC FLOW SAMPLING PROCEDURE FOR ESTIMATING THE SEASONAL EFFECTS AND THE AVERAGE DAILY TRAFFIC FLOWS IS DISCUSSED. USING AVAILABLE DATA, DAILY TRAFFIC FLOWS WERE SELECTED FOR TWO DAYS LOCATED RANDOMLY WITHIN EACH MONTH. AN ANALYSIS OF THE AVERAGE DAILY TRAFFIC (ADT) FLOW WAS PERFORMED. IT IS ASSUMED THAT THE DISTRIBUTION OF ONE-DAY TRAFFIC FLOWS IS NORMAL. /BPR/
