ARVADA'S SIGNAL CONTROL SYSTEM

RAPID CHANGES IN THE TRAFFIC FLOW PATTERNS RESULTED FROM THE INTERACTION OF FOUR RELATED FACTORS: (1) COMPLETION OF INTERSTATE 70 ON THE SOUTHERN EDGE OF THE CITY, (2) NEW SUBDIVISIONS ON THE NORTH AND WEST BOUNDARIES, (3) NUMBER OF VEHICLES INCREASING PER DWELLING, AND (4) THE INADEQUACY OF THE EAST-WEST ARTERIALS. A PROPOSED SIGNAL CONTROL SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED FOR A NEW MASTER CONTROLLER AND RELATED EQUIPMENT. THE NEW SYSTEM OFFERS GREATER FLEXIBILITY IN OPERATING INTERSECTIONS USING ANALOG COMPUTERS, A MINI-COMPUTER OR AN ON-LINE DIGITAL COMPUTER.
