COMMUNICATION SYSTEM TECHNOLOGY AND ITS USE IN TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS
SINCE THE FIRST LOCAL INTERSECTION CONTROLLER MOVED ITS FIRST AUTOMOBILE, A KNOWLEDGE OF THE BASIC ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC CONCEPTS UNDERLYING DATA TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN OF DIRECT IMPORTANCE TO THE TRAFFIC ENGINEER. RECENTLY, THE HIGH VOLUME INTERSECTION, ARTERIAL AND CITY-WIDE TRAFFIC CONTROL, AND THE ADVENT OF STATEWIDE VEHICLE COUNTING SYSTEMS HAS INTENSIFIED THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS KNOWLEDGE, AND FAMILIARITY WITH COMMUNICATIONS TECHNIQUES WILL SOON BE A VIRTUAL NECESSITY AS LARGER AND MORE SOPHISTICATED COMPUTERIZED CENTRAL CONTROL SYSTEMS BECOME OPERATIONAL THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE WORLD. THIS STUDY IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE A FEW BASIC STEPS IN THAT DIRECTION. THE SPECTRUM OF ACCUMULATED KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD WAS SAMPLED. INFORMATION AND DESIGN CONCEPTS FAVORABLY RELATED TO TRAFFIC CONTROL TECHNIQUES AND PRINCIPLES ARE SINGLED OUT AND HIGHLIGHTED. THESE FACTS, TEAMED WITH MARKETING REQUIREMENTS, PROVIDE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE EFFECTIVE UTILIZATION OF COMMUNICATIONS KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNIQUES IN TRAFFIC CONTROL. /AUTHOR/
