SIGNALIZING TRAFFIC NETWORKS: A SIMPLIFIED APPROACH

THIS PAPER PRESENTS AN EVALUATION OF TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROL IN URBAN STREET NETWORKS BASED ON A SEMI- TRAFFIC ACTUATED STRATEGY FOR REVISING TRAFFIC SIGNAL CYCLES AND SPLITS. A MODEL WAS DEVELOPED FOR APPLICATION TO A SEMI-TRAFFIC ACTUATED SIGNAL SYSTEM. THIS WAS DONE FOR A ONE-WAY GRID SYSTEM WHICH HAS BEEN DEEMED AN APPROPRIATE TEST SITUATION TO VALIDATE THE METHOD. A HIGHER ORDER VEHICLE ARRIVAL ASSUMPTION, THE HYPERLANG DISTRIBUTION, WAS USED TO DESCRIBE VEHICLE ARRIVALS AT INTERSECTIONS. THE FINAL PRODUCT WAS A COMPUTER PROGRAM WHICH TAKES FLOW RATES AT INPUT NODES TO THE SYSTEM AND USES THEM TO DETERMINE SIGNAL CYCLES AND PHASE SPLITS IN THE NETWORK, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT SERVICE LEVEL AND VEHICLE DELAY. IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROGRAM, SPECIAL ATTENTION WAS PAID TO MINIMIZING THE AMOUNT OF DATA AND COMPUTER TIME NEEDED IN AN EFFORT TO DEVELOP A SYSTEM LESS COSTLY THAN THOSE PRESENTLY EXISTING. VALIDATION OF THE PROGRAM WAS CARRIED OUT BY MEANS OF COMPUTER SIMULATION OF TRAFFIC IN A PORTION OF THE PITTSBURGH CBD. COMPARISON OF PROPOSED CYCLES WITH EXISTING ONES INDICATES POSSIBLE IMPROVED TRAFFIC FLOW USING THE PROPOSED APPROACH. /AUTHOR/
