BALANCED TRANSPORTATION THROUGH EFFICIENT USE OF EXISTING FACILITIES

THE RESULTS OF A RECENT STUDY, " A SYSTEM TO FACILITATE BUS RAPID TRANSIT ON URBAN FREEWAYS," ARE PRESENTED. THE UNDERLYING CONCEPT WAS ATTRACTING PEAK PERIOD PASSENGERS TO INCREASE FREEWAY CAPACITY, THROUGH IMPROVED BUS SERVICE. FREEWAY SURVEILLANCE AND CONTROL SYSTEMS WOULD BE DESIGNED TO MAINTAIN MAXIMUM BUS SPEEDS, THROUGH TRAFFIC CONTROL PRIORITIES AND RESTRICTED AUTOMOBILE ACCESS. BUS ROUTING AND SCHEDULING MUST BE PLANNED IN TERMS OF TRIP LINK PATTERNS TO PROVIDE LOW TOTAL TRAVEL TIME TO PATRONS. COST- EFFECTIVENESS IS CONSIDERED AND A COMPUTER CONTROLLED RAMP ACCESS SYSTEM PRESENTED. THE SYSTEM IS CONCLUDED TO BE FEASIBLE ON THE BASIS OF ITS FUNCTIONAL CONTROL REQUIREMENTS AND THE EXISTING TECHNOLOGY OF FREEWAY CONTROL AND SURVEILLANCE. THE SYSTEM'S FINAL AND PUBLIC ACCEPTANCE POTENTIAL REQUIRE FURTHER STUDY.
