SPECIAL HAZARD WARNING SIGNS

A THREE-STEP PROCEDURE IS RECOMMENDED: (1) ASCERTAINING THE HAZARD; (2) PRODUCING A SIGN THAT WILL CONVEY A MESSAGE ACCURATELY; (3) PLACING OF THE SIGN WITH AMPLE TIME FOR ACTION. IN THE EXAMPLE GIVEN, A SCENIC DISTRACTION HAD RESULTED IN SEVERAL ACCIDENTS AT ONE SITE. A SPECIAL SIGN AND A TURNOUT WERE DESIGNED TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
