ANALYSIS AND VALIDATION OF LANE-DROP EFFECTS ON MULTI-LANE FREEWAYS
THIS REPORT PRESENTS AN ANLAYSIS OF LANE-DROP EFFECTS ON FREEWAYS. A MATHEMATICAL MODEL WHICH DESCRIBED THE DENSITY PERTURBATION ON A MULTILANE FREEWAY WAS FORMULATED AND VALIDATED. THE HYDRODYNAMIC THEORY OF TRAFFIC FLOW WAS EMPLOYED FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MATHEMATICAL MODEL. SEVERAL TYPES OF LANE-DROP WERE STUDIED. THIS WAVE PROPAGATION OF DENSITY PERTURBATIONS WAS OBTAINED IN EACH CASE WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF BOUNDARY CONDITIONS. FOR VALIDATION PURPOSES, AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC FIELD DATA WERE TAKEN ON TWO SELECTED FREEWAY LANE-DROP SITES. THESE DATA WERE THEN COMPARED TO THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM THE MATHEMATICAL MODEL. /TR/
