OPTIMIZING THE USE OF AMBER IN TRAFFIC SIGNALS

AN INVESTIGATION OF VARIOUS WAYS OF USING AMBER IN TRAFFIC SIGNALS WAS CONDUCTED, IN WHICH THE DESIRABILITY OF PERMANENT CHANGES THROUGHOUT THE TRAFFIC SYSTEM WAS INVESTIGATED BY MEANS OF CHANGES WITHIN A PARTICULAR SUBSYSTEM. THE SUBSYSTEM CHOSEN WAS A SECTION OF MAJOR ARTERIAL ROAD, AND OBSERVATIONS WERE MADE OF TRAFFIC STARTING AND STOPPING AT CONSECUTIVE SIGNALS ALONG IT. SYSTEMATIC VARIATION OF AMBER USAGE PRODUCED SOME ALTERATIONS IN PATTERNS OF DRIVER BEHAVIOR. AT SOME INTERSECTIONS, THE USE OF A RED PLUS AND MINUS AMBER PERIOD, OR "STARTING AMBER", BEFORE THE GREEN DECREASED STARTING DELAYS. THERE WAS NO EVIDENT ADVANTAGE IN MAINTAINING "STOPPING AMBER" DURATION AT A CONSTANT 3 SEC THROUGHOUT THE TRAFFIC SYSTEM, RATHER THAN VARYING IT TO SUIT INDIVIDUAL INTERSECTION CHARACTERISTICS. /AUTHOR/
