FURTHER RESULTS OF AREA TRAFFIC CONTROL IN GLASGOW
THE RESULTS OF STUDIES OF THE FIFTH AND SIXTH CONTROL SCHEMES, PLIDENT AND SIGOP, ARE GIVEN. THE MAIN CONCLUSIONS FROM THIS SERIES OF STUDIES IS THAT SUBSTANTIAL SAVINGS IN JOURNEY TIME CAN BE OBTAINED BY COORDINATING SIGNALS ON AN AREA BASIS USING ONE OF THE THREE OPTIMIZING TECHNIQUES--THE COMBINATION METHOD, TRANSYT OR SIGOP--TO OBTAIN THE SIGNAL SETTINGS. FOR TRAFFIC CONDITIONS DURING THE WORKING DAY, NO SCHEME TRIED IN GLASGOW WAS FOUND TO BE SUPERIOR TO THE COORDINATED FIXED-TIME SYSTEM OBTAINED USING THESE OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUES. EXPERIENCE OF MEASURING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ATC SYSTEMS IS GIVEN AND FUTURE WORK AND POLICIES ARE DISCUSSED. /AUTHOR/
