AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF LANE CHANGING ON MULTILANE HIGHWAYS

A MACROSCOPIC ANALYSIS IS DESCRIBED OF LANE-CHANGING BEHAVIOR ON MULTILANE HIGHWAYS. IT INCLUDES DESCRIPTIONS OF THE PATTERN AND FREQUENCY OF LANE-CHANGING MANEUVERS OBSERVED UNDER VARYING ROAD AND TRAFFIC CONDITIONS, THE DISTRIBUTION OF MANEUVER LENGTHS AND TIMES, AND THE ACCEPTANCE AND REJECTION OF GAPS BY LANE-CHANGING VEHICLES. DATA FOR THE STUDY WERE COLLECTED AT A SAMPLE OF 30 FREEWAY-LOCATIONS IN CHICAGO. /AUTHOR/
