TOLL COLLECTION-EQUIPMENT AND METHODS

THE TOLL COLLECTION SYSTEM AT THE AUCKLAND HARBOR BRIDGE IS DESCRIBED. THIS BRIDGE WAS OPENED TO TRAFFIC AS A FOUR- LANE STRUCTURE IN 1959 BUT, BY 1963, IT WAS NECESSARY TO PLAN FOR ADDITIONAL ROAD CAPACITY. THE TOLL PLAZA FOR THE FOUR-LANE STRUCTURE CONSISTED OF TEN LANES WITH NINE TOLL BOOTHS WHICH CONTAINED ELECTRO-MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT. THE TOLL PLAZA HAS NOW BEEN EXTENDED TO PROVIDE FOR AN ULTIMATE TWENTY-LANE OPERATION. AT THE PRESENT TIME, FIFTEEN LANES WITH FOURTEEN TOLL BOOTHS ARE OPERATIONAL. THE POSSIBILITIES ATE BEING INVESTIGATED OF USING THE ONE-WAY TOLL SYSTEM USED AT THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE. THE FIVE LANES NOT IN USE AND WITHOUT TOLL BOOTHS COULD BE IDEALLY SUITED FOR THE FREE TRAFFIC FLOW. UPGRADING OF EQUIPMENT IS BEING CARRIED OUT IN STAGES WHICH INVOLVES THE INITIAL REGISTRATION OF VEHICLES BY A TOLL COLLECTOR WHO WILL OPERATE A BUTTON BOX. DIGITAL INTEGRATED CIRCUITS OF THE RTL TYPE ARE USED FOR BOTH THE DATA STORAGE AND THE LOGIC SECTIONS OF THIS SYSTEM, AND PUNCHED PAPER TAPE PRODUCED EACH TIME A TOLL COLLECTOR FINISHES A SHIFT. THIS TAPE BEARING ALL THE PRIMARY DATA RELATING TO THAT SHIFT, IS FED INTO A TABLE-TOP COMPUTER WHICH CALCULATES AND PRINTS OUT THE AMOUNT OF CASH WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN COLLECTED. ALL READOUTS FROM THE LANE DATA STORES IN THE EQUIPMENT OCCUR ON DEMAND FROM THE TOLL BOOTHS, AND ARE INITIATED BOTH WHEN THE COLLECTOR INSERTS AND WITHDRAWS HIS CODED IDENTIFIER KEY. DIRECT TOLL PLAZA SUPERVISION OF THE TOLL COLLECTION IS CARRIED OUT FROM A CENTRAL CONTROL ROOM. THE SYSTEM HAS ALREADY RESULTED IN SAVINGS IN TIME AND STAFF.
