TOLL COLLECTION-EQUIPMENT AND METHODS

TWO ADVANCED TYPES OF TOLL COLLECTION EQUIPMENT IN USE OR IN THE PROCESS OF BEING INSTALLED ON THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE ARE DESCRIBED. AT INTERCHANGE 17 IS A BARRIER TYPE STATION AT WHICH AN AUTOMATIC TOLL COLLECTION SYSTEM HAS BEEN IN OPERATION FOR SIX YEARS. INSTEAD OF THE USUAL MONEY DROP INTO THE LOCKED DEPOSITORY BOX, THE COINS ARE STACKED UP IN A CONTAINER SET DIRECTLY ABOVE A GROUP OF CLOSELY KNIT ROLLERS. RECEIPTS ARE AUTOMATICALLY COUNTED AND ARE FED THROUGH THE ROLLERS INTO A THREE INCH PIPE. THEY ARE VACUUMED THROUGH THE PIPE INTO THE UTILITY BUILDING SECURITY ROOM WHERE THE COINAGE IS DRUM SORTED, ELECTRONICALLY COUNTED AND DEPOSITED BY DENOMINATION INTO LOCKED BOXES. UNDER THE PRESENT TURNPIKE WIDENING PROGRAM, IT IS PROPOSED TO INSTALL NEW ENTRY LANE EQUIPMENT WHICH WILL TIME STAMP THE TOLL TICKETS ON ENTRY, PUNCH IN THE COLLECTOR'S KEY NUMBER, THE INTERCHANGE, THE DATE, TIME AND CLASS OF VEHICLE. EACH ENTRY COLLECTOR'S TICKETS WILL BE SERIALLY NUMBERED ALLOWING A COMPLETE CHECK ON EACH ENTRY COLLECTOR'S WORK TO THE POINT THAT IT CAN BE DETERMINED AT WHAT INTERCHANGE AND THROUGH WHICH COLLECTOR'S LANE THE TICKET WAS USED FOR EXIT. THIS EQUIPMENT WILL GRADUALLY REPLACE ALL PRESENT ENTRY LANE EQUIPMENT AND NO PROBLEM IS ANTICIPATED IN ADJUSTING THE EXISTING AUTOMATIC ISSUING MACHINES TO THE SAME PUNCHING OPERATION.
