FEEDBACK CONCEPTS OF DRIVER BEHAVIOUR AND THE HIGHWAY INFORMATION SYSTEM

A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK BASED ON SENSORY-MOTOR FEEDBACK CONTROL IS PROPOSED FOR THE UNDERSTANDING OF DRIVER BEHAVIOR AND THE DESIGN OF HIGHWAY INFORMATION SYSTEMS. DRIVER PERFORMANCE IS CONSIDERED AS A CLOSED-LOOP DRIVER VEHICLE-ROAD TRACKING SYSTEM WHITH BUILT-IN-TIME AND SPACE COHERENCE IN WHICH MULTI-DIMENSIONAL CHANNELLING OF FEEDBACK INFORMATION ON VEHICLE MOVEMENT IS ESSENTIAL TO EFFICIENT MOTOR CONTROL. A HIGHWAY INFORMATION SYSTEM IS BELIEVED TO BE MAXIMALLY EFFICIENT IF IT UTILIZES MULTI-CHANNEL SENSORY INPUTS, ON THE BASIS OF SPACE-TIME COHERENCE REQUIREMENTS FOR EFFICIENT STEERING, A PRIMARY AND AN AUXILIARY INFORMATION SYSTEM ARE SUGGESTED, AND THE POSSIBLE UTILIZATION OF SEVERAL SENSORY MODES FOR INFORMATION DISPLAY ARE DISCUSSED.
