Managing Australasian pavement technology and its delivery

In the past, pavement technology expertise resided mainly in public sector organisations such as individual state roads authorities and the Australian Road Research Board. The general downsizing of government roading agencies both in Australia and New Zealand in recent years has meant that a significant amount of traditional public sector work in the areas of technology development and training is now being undertaken by industry organisations. To ensure that pavement technology expertise continues to be developed and maintained in such a way that it remains relevant and, wherever possible, in harmony throughout Australia and New Zealand, it has been recognised that a coordinated approach across the full spectrum of activities including research and development, setting of standards, training and education, is required by all parties involved. This paper describes how such a coordinated approach is being achieved through a partnership between the various public and private sector interest groups, and how the AUSTROADS Pavement Research Group is playing a lead role to ensure best use of available resources, with the aims of maximising the value of outputs and minimising duplication.
