The safety benefits of sealing the shoulders of rural roads
Based upon accident and traffic flow data for Victorian rural highways, the analysis indicates that the provision of a narrow (600-200mm) sealed shoulder provides safety benefits. Casualty accidents were reduced by 43% on a vehicle-km basis, and the break-even point (the point at which it is economically worthwhile) to install sealed shoulders is about 350 veh/d.
