EFFECT OF GUARDRAIL IN NARROW MEDIAN UPON PENNSYLVANIA DRIVERS

VEHICULAR SPEED, LATERAL PLACEMENT AND CLEARANCE WERE MEASURED BEFORE AND AFTER THE ERECTION OF A BARRIER ON A 4-FT CENTRAL RESERVE OF A DIVIDED HIGHWAY. NO REDUCTION IN VEHICULAR SPEEDS OR DENSITIES WAS FOUND BUT CLEARANCE BETWEEN ADJACENT VEHICLES WAS REDUCED BY 0.4 FT BECAUSE IN THE LANE NEAREST THE CENTRAL RESERVE VEHICULAR PLACEMENTS WERE SHIFTED TO THE RIGHT BY AS MUCH AS 0.5 FT AFTER THE BARRIER WAS INSTALLED. AN ACCIDENT STUDY WAS ALSO MADE INDICATING POSSIBLE FORM OF CONSTRUCTION OF THE BARRIER. /RRL/
